Samuel Morse and the Telegraph

According to the Wordsworth Dictionary of Biography, Samuel Finley Breese Morse (1791–1872) "produced the first adequate electric telegraph in 1835. In 1843 he was granted $30,000 by Congress for an experimental line between Washington and Baltimore. With his assistant Alexander Bain he invented the Morse Code. He was also a respected portrait painter."
